In this report, I learnt the significance of text flow. The text must be FLOW!!! To achieve this, idea link logically was the first important thing to bearing in mind. Secondly, body paragraphs should have a clear theme for each and some examples to support ideas, and moreover, linking words are indispensable. Thirdly, there should have some connection between each paragraph, which guides reader what will be the next. Topic sentence for each paragraph should point out the big theme for this paragraph. At the same time, there are many small themes for each sentence, and therefore the structure of each sentence should have a theme at the beginning of the sentence then follow by another theme, which then become the first theme for the next sentence. Furthermore, formal writing means more nominalisation, thus change verbs to nouns are necessary sometimes, as well as use abstract nouns to make communicating complex idea. For example, I used feminism to express women’s desire for equality. Besides, to make the report more interesting and convictive, use pictures or graph is a good tool. Lastly, don’t forget to put in-text referencing in the text and bibliography at the end.
PowerPoint
As the PowerPoint says: “questions are less intimidating than resolutions.” In my view, the reason of this is that resolutions are more like our dreams- we say it then leave it and do not think about it any more. To do the opposite, we think more carefully when we do it in a question form, because we will start thinking and trying to answer it, therefore the question is more doable than resolution. When it comes to how I can have a highly organised year, I think the most important thing is to work consistently. I have heard a girl who did the same amount of work everyday and she got merit in the end. Secondly, I think making a plan is also a good tool to keep organised. I’m not going to make a general plan but to make a specific one and spread the biggest amounts of time into several 45 minutes sectors. Of course I will put in short break times between each sector as I believe “all work and no play makes Jake a dull boy.” Hopefully, I will fulfill my plans have an organised year. In the article The Internet of Things written in 2014, the author writes that the Internet of Things (IoT) is a technological system that connects objects to the Internet network. The author estimates the time of adoption of The Internet of Things is four to five years. The item is presented in the form of a formal magazine article in which the author shares his or her opinion and analysis as an expert to both students and teachers. The author begins with the definition of The Internet of Things and introduces it to the audiences by describing what The Internet of Things can do, and provides some examples, such as passport tracking, point-of-sale purchases, and inventory management. Obviously this article has many footnoting references and some links at the end of the article, which shows this item is well researched and it is not only the author’s opinion, but also a summary based on other people’s opinions. I agree with the author’s opinion of The Internet of Things is a good development for the future, as the author states, “(The Internet of Things) is no longer far-fetched to envision a world where all objects and devices are connected to act in concert.” However, this new technology would cause security and privacy issue just like all the other technology works with Internet. I concern about The Internet of Things may causes danger if computer hackers are able to sift through people’s profile with relative ease, leaving you to potentially be victimized in some fashion. "Try" is track #4 on the album Gypsy Heart (Side A). It was co-written by R&B legend Kenneth “babyface” Edmonds and Colbie Caillat.
In this song, Colbie Caillat makes a thoughtful statement about unfair beauty ideals by shunning hair and make-up, and it is all from personal experiences. This song is about how people try so hard to fit in and they don't need to. Colbie reveals, “I felt like people were trying to change me in the industry. I was getting so tired of how exhausting it is being a woman, trying to look sexy and wear tons of makeup on TV. And if you don’t, people think you look weird or awkward.” She explained that when she went back in the studio with Grammy winning Producer Babyface and her long time co-writers and friends Jason Reeves and Tony, she vetted these frustrations. They responded simply, “You don’t have to try. You need to go against what they are saying.” She conceded, “We wrote ‘Try’ that moment.” Don’t think these messages are coming from a man to make a woman look a certain way, but here is a man encouraging Colbie to write about it. Obviously, Colbie is a public character, but she is extraordinarily brave because she didn’t have Photoshop on this album cover. She didn’t prepare or starve herself and over-exercise, neither did she get her nails and hair done, nor get a facial or a stylist. Just like the characters who are in this song’s video, everyone is trying to hide their faults from each other. When they have blemishes on their skin, gain weight, have crooked teeth, are bald, or have hair roots that are going grey, they pulled themselves on the stage, to remove all their ornaments and makeup. They are confident to show their weakness of appearance to the audiences and the video looks like they are having fun at party. The hardest part about being a female in today’s society is to try to live up to other people’s expectations. When we do get dolled up, we get more compliments. The first thing people comment on is your image when you have a cute outfit on and your makeup looks amazing. When you don’t wear makeup, you hear things like, “Oh, you look tired or you’re so brave for not wearing makeup!" Remember that makeup and accessories do not necessarily cover you for life. Get inspired by these lyrics of Try: You don't have to try so hard You don't have to, give it all away You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up You don't have to change a single thing Wait a second, Why, should you care, what they think of you When you're all alone, by yourself, do you like you? Do you like you? Take your make-up off Let your hair down Take a breath Look into the mirror, at yourself Don't you like you? Cause I like you I know that once a person gets used to something, it’s hard to change your habits. But please stop having materialistic perspectives about women. Tell someone who’s not outside beautiful but on the inside, “you are the apple in my eyes”. It’s hard to make excuses to a child who is going to sleep hungry, as hard to tell someone who’s dying curable illness that we don’t have time to care. That is why I choose POVERTY as the global issue that I'm interested in. When we talk about poverty, there always a picture jump out at my mind: an malnourished little girl is getting up every morning from a dirt- and illness-stained mattress just because of global inequality wealth. The sheets have long since been used for diapers. Poverty is living in a smell that never leaves. That is why I choose poverty, global inequality and malnutrition as my mainly concepts of my topic. Here is a Thinklink shows about the many faces of poverty. From those "hotspots", you will see a Soundcloud definition of global inequality, a TedTalk video about “the quest to end poverty: It's the challenge of our age?”, and a detailed animation describing child malnutrition, focusing on the types, causes, signs and when a health worker should refer. October 17th is an international day for the international poverty.
Let's start action on the poverty. You can make a difference!! Here is a little reflection of using Fotobabble ;) When I firstly signed up a new account in Fotobabble and tried to create a new Fotobabble, I felt very annoyed as it did not record. I tried so many times hoping it would work but it didn’t. Then I realised I needed to allowed Fotobabble use my computer’s microphone. I felt nervous when I recording myself because it cannot edit, which means I need to start again if I made any mistakes during the recording. However, I think Fotobabble gives us a good opportunity to practice English, and organize knowledge before we speak. Also I feel my pronunciation getting better during the time I repeated my text. My first impression of Little Paradise started when I looked at the cover. It made me interested since I wanted to know who the lady in the Cheongsam on the cover was, what her face looks like.
After reading the first two chapters I wondered what would happen to the relationship between Mirabel and her friend Rose, and her bond with her family. As I read the first few chapters, I enjoyed learning new expressions. Such as, once Rose said to Mirabel, ‘if you want to change a person’s way of thinking, you need to find something you have in common.’ Also I learned some new words, such as, puzzled, sniffing, squint, shrug, trudge, cyclone, linger. On page 55, the third paragraph was setting in Mirabel’s cousin’s birthday party, which gave the chance to Mirabel met the Chinese soldiers, JJ, for the first time. It was the starting point of the whole romance story between Mirabel and JJ. Being with someone you love has enough power to create a little paradise between you two in your heart. In their paradise, JJ and Mirabel are each other’s angel. Many “first times” happened on Mirabel after she met JJ: first time made her own decision, first time fell in love with someone, first time pregnant, first time left her family, first time tried to protect someone else and so on. Because of JJ, Mirabel changed from a good, obedient daughter to a brave, independent woman. The author described emotion, expression, scene, and bearing in details about both Mirabel and JJ. Additionally, I learnt some words from this paragraph, such as, graze, intense, intelligent and straightened. An immigrant, who is from a needy country, leaves his wife and child in the country since he tries to find a better life in an unknown country, which is on the other side of the ocean. The only thing he takes is a suitcase and a little money. He faces lots of trouble which other immigrants always face, such as, struggle with another language, confusion with the new environment and culture, and difficulty finding a job. As time passes, things get better so he looks forward to his family is coming to stay with him.
The Arrival written by Shaun Tan is a graphic migration novel as a series of wordless images that might come from a long forgotten time. The book not only in sections but also is a linear-story that interrupted by flashbacks of other immigrants’ stories. The reader is a third party and watches the whole fictive story where no characters’ name appears. The main character drawn as an ordinary person, who is from a needy country, lives poor but happy with his wife and daughter. Although he wears old fashion clothes, they look clean and tidy. The Arrival uses sepia toned drawn with reminiscence style. Different images size been drawn in this book, including, full page drawing, double page spread, and series of cameo representations. All drawings have film-like qualities, perspective creatures and some landscape images drawn with overhead angles or ground level angles. There is a double page spread drawing and a series of plants growing very reflective. The former describes the original country that the main character from, where numerous huge dark dragon tails through houses and streets can be seen and full of evil feeling. The later has 24 separate pictures describe a plant grow, from seed till it died over four seasons, which telling the reader time passed. Lyrics:

Comment: In this song, the writer show us a heart-broken woman by using her words. As the song name, rolling in the deep, it summaries the main point of the song as a complex feeling about a woman when she fall in love with someone and finally finds out about her boyfriend betrayed her. The song reflects this woman’s feeling, emotions, and the feeling of heart been hurt deeply. The song precise described her boyfriend’s betrayal not led to her heart breaking but give her a new feeling. A “fire” starting in her heart and her dark thoughts desiring to revenge and break her boyfriend piece by piece and make him feel more hurt than she did. She also repeats the words again and again for emphasising her thoughts. |
